Chapter 7

Mirabella pretended to be asleep when Lincoln returned that night. She lay still beneath the blankets, her heart pounding as he moved silently through the room and slipped into his bed. She waited a few minutes before risking a peek.

He lay only a metre away, yet the gap between their beds felt like a canyon. The memory of his hot mouth on hers sent shivers through her body to the warm, tender spot between her thighs. She squeezed her legs together, but it did nothing to dull the ache as she pressed her hand to her belly.

She watched his chest rise and fall beneath his grey T-shirt. Had she been too bold in confessing she’d share her baby? Had she come on too strong? She hadn’t planned to say it. She’d wanted to romance Lincoln slowly. Have him fall in love with her again.

But at the first opportunity, she’d blurted out her plan like a desperate woman seeking a baby-daddy.

Disgusted with herself, Mirabella closed her eyes. At this rate, she’d never get to sleep. But it broke her heart that Lincoln wouldn’t even try. Yes, she knew that Eric wasn’t the friendliest of men. She’d borne witness to Lincoln’s cold childhood home with the absence of family affection. She knew he’d strived to be like Eric … but he’d also aspired to be like his grandfather. And Lincoln’s grandfather had been a cheerful old guy with a warm, loving heart of gold.

Just like Lincoln.

They could be a family. Deep down, Mirabella knew that. She and Lincoln could recapture everything they’d sacrificed at eighteen. They’d both achieved their goals and now was their chance to be together. She could paint on the balcony of their Sydney Harbour home and they could raise her miracle baby together. Because it was a miracle—something neither of them could have produced with only each other. They could be happy, just the three of them. And Honey, of course.

But it would never happen. Opening her eyes, Mirabella gritted her teeth as she glared at Lincoln’s back. That dream would never come true because Lincoln thought he was better off alone. He wouldn’t try. And that … that made Mirabella mad.

She woke first, as she always did considering the impact pregnancy had on her bladder. But this morning, Mirabella took extra care not to wake Lincoln as she gathered her clothes and tiptoed into the bathroom. Sighing, she stepped beneath the warm spray of the shower, but it did nothing to wash away her anger.

A mistake? Kissing her had been a mistake?

Mirabella’s chest constricted as she squeezed a generous amount of coconut shower cream onto her loofah. Kissing Lincoln last night had felt so good. So right. Had been better than she’d imagined this past week. He’d held her with such passion in his solid embrace. She’d felt protected. Like nothing could ever hurt her again.

But she’d been wrong. He would hurt her if she continued with this ridiculous plan. Even if it was what she wanted, it was still ridiculous.
